Rest Assured

Easter 2010

Hey folks.  For those of you that stop by from time to time, thank you.  I do have things to say, but life has taken the spotlight recently.  I am very focused on my first, and most beloved project, The Speedzine.  At the TheSpeedzine.com, I am blogging and reporting on various motorsports topics and headlines.  Doing this, and reporting on the races each week, has taken up a lot of the time I would normally have devoted to this blog.

Twitter.  Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook have become the portals to which I update the day to day ongoings of my life.  I am exploring how I can really utilize those conduits, plus this blog, in complete synergy.  How exactly, I am still working on.
One thing is for sure.  This is where the difinitve profile for myself, Daniel C. Vining, will live.  Somehow, most likely with Flickr, I will begin to post a ton of photos.  I will update my online resume, and keep you up to date on my other projects.
So rest assured, if you care, that this site is not dead.  Stay tuned!

Toned Down the Layout

Website Design

Website Design

I liked the Skinpress Layout I was using up until the point that I realized that the CSS images were causing long load times, and cluttering up the feel of the site.  So I decided to find a similar theme that holds some of the characteristics of the previous theme’s look and feel.

This new theme has a few wrinkles that I need to sort out, but I feel like it is a step in the right direction.

I have just installed a plug-in called Twitter Tools.  Among other things, this plug-in will allow me to post a daily digest of my tweets, and is the same set of tools I am using for tweets.danielvining.com.  In addition to the Twitter plug-in, I have also installed a photo gallery plug-in that will allow me to self host all my photos on this website.  I will also be working on my comments section, as well as updating all the various pages throughout the site.

If you have an idea for my site, shoot me a line or two.  You can email, dan@danielvining.com, or tweet me @danielvining.

CoverCast: Rascal Flatts "What hurts the most" by Drew Davis

CoverCast is a project I am working on in my spare time that blends my love of music with social networking, netcasting, and blogging.  Here is a taste of the type of videos you will find when CoverCast.com rolls out in the near future.  Comments and discussion are very welcome.  Enjoy!

Changing Servers

Minduka_NotebookAll three readers of my blog, and whatever visitors to my website will soon notice that I will be moving over from my self hosted website to WordPress.com.  I would love to keep my self hosted site, but my financial situation will not allow me to for now.  It is more important for me to keep my two primary domain names, danielvining.com and thespeedzine.com.  I also want to register a couple more here soon so utilizing the free hosting features of WordPress.com is my best option for now.

The WordPress.com route does have it’s draw backs.  I will not be able to use some of the widgets that I would like to due to unauthorized codes within the WordPress.com framework. I also do not have as many choices on my theme, at least not without added cost.  Thankfully, I really like the theme I have chosen.

The most important thing above any of the visual elements is my content.  I know I don’t have the best content, but I like to have a place where I can share my thoughts, ramblings, opinions, experiences and anything random that I want to.

I am done saying the famous blogger’s failing quote that I am going to try my best to post everyday, or every week, and keep up with my blog more regularly.  That is just setting myself up to look like a dummy.  I have been around this technology to know that I will have phases where I will be blog crazy, and times where I will all but forget that it exists.  Life doesn’t always afford me the time to work on this site, and sometimes I am just not into it.  As addicted as I am to social media, blogging is not that high on my list.

This is however, the place where I can come and go as I choose, write almost anything I want, when I want… and I am happy with that.

Getting Up to Speed

I have great news.  I found a job.  After being home for two months, and searching for about two weeks, I was hired by one of the first places I applied to.  Thanks in part to a nice recommendation from my girlfriend, I will be starting as a Customer Service Representative for a Circle K that is very close to where I live.  This is a good thing, because having this job will afford me the ability to keep my truck, and to continue to work on finding a design job, building my portfolio and continuing my education in the design field.  I no longer have to worry about finding something, anything, just to put money in my pocket.  That is a huge relief.

I know that many would see this as a crappy job, but convenience stores need cashiers.  My girlfriend likes what she does, even with the less than desirable schedule.  One side bonus of this situation is that I will be working with her, sharing the same shifts, and thus being able to see her a little more than I already do.  That is always a good thing.

Beyond the relief of now having a job, I have picked up work on The Speedzine once again.  At the moment, I am working on building content, and still trying to finalize the design.  I have a feeling that a final design will come along further down the road, but one thing concerning the design is set.  I will utilize the WordPress platform for this project.  It seems to be the most efficient way to do this at present time.  If I can update at least one thing a day on the site, I will be happy.

Speaking of updating, after only about a month or so under this design, I am already finding myself wishing I had stuck with WordPress for my main website.  I know that going that route will hinder potential employer’s view of me as a web designer, but I will be working on enough projects to fit that bill.  Additionally, I finally found a program that will help me desgin WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal templates on my own.  More about that in the future, but for now I will probably be switching back to a blog format for my main website.

In another project that I am anticipate being fun, I hope to roll out with ChatrPad very soon.  I have truly dove into the details, but here is what I do know.  The name will be ChatrPad.  It will be my take on microblogging and my first official foray into social networking.  It will feature a frog as a mascot.  The point of the project will be to provide a more personal social experience where you can just chat.  Sure, you will be able to share videos, links, and the like, but that isn’t the point.  The point is to be able to tell the world that you just ate a sandwich, or that you really enjoyed watching retro cartoons from the 1980s.  I would love to develop a platform that takes the best attributes of Twitter, AIM, YouTube, and Myspace and meld them into one symbiotic service.

Well that’s about it for me and what I am up to recently.  I really feel lucky to be where I am at right now.  Sure, I have problems, but who doesn’t.  The things I deal with in bad luck are more than made up for from having the opportunity to start over in life.  For better or worse I am pretty much the same person I have always been, now with a bit more experience.  I have been given a new start at life, and I intend on taking full advantage of the opportunity.  I have a great family, good friends, and the love of my life.  I am working on bettering myself and will try my very best to do it the right way this go around. Life IS good.

I am working very hard on the re-design …

I am working very hard on the re-design of www.DANIELVINING.com. I hope to be done with the greater part of that site by the end of the week.
