Bonnett Out of Surgery; Details on Severity of Crash
MOBILE, Alabama (December 11, 2019) — Justin Bonnett continues his path to recovery after a terrifying crash in Saturday night’s 21st Snowflake 100 left the Hueytown, Alabama driver with severe burns and broken bones resulting in a stay in the intensive care unit for over 48 hours.
Following emergency treatment at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida on Saturday night, Bonnett was transferred to USA Health University Hospital for further treatments.
On Tuesday, Bonnett was released from the ICU and place in a private room, taken off oxygen, and even gave a brief statement thanking his supporters.
Bonnett: “It is truly an honor to have all of the support. Thanks everyone for everything.”
On Wednesday, Bonnett had surgery to install a rod into his leg, and further treatment to his burns.
A statement from Justin Bonnett Racing:
“Justin is out of surgery and in recovery. Everything went well. Ortho placed the rod and it will take time for the bone to heal. His burns were cleaned and no skin grafts were needed at this time. Both the burns and breaks are being watched closely for infection. Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers.”
This follows further details being released about the severity of the crash.
Bonnett was burned on his face, neck, knuckles, and left arm after fire from the crash reached his cockpit. The crash occurred early in the event when Jarrett Parker had a brake failure. Going into turn three at Five Flags Speedway, Parker and Bonnett’s cars made violent contact.
From the Bonnett family:
“We have been asked as to how Justin was on fire inside the cockpit and how and why it reignited after being sprayed by the suppression system. When Justin’s car struck Jarrett’s car the fuel cell was dislodged and ended up hitting and busting Justin’s windshield. The fuel cell was spraying fuel and once Justin’s windshield was compromised Justin and the inside of our car was sprayed with fuel. The left front tire was blown on impact and once on the rim the sparks from the wheel ignited the fire and the inferno started. It was just easier to post once than try and answer all the questions. Thanks for your concern.”
Bonnett was in a ball of flame for approximately one minute as track crews rushed to his aide.
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help the family with costs.
From the GoFundMe page:
“Justin sustained serious injuries during the Snowflake race at 5 Flags Speedway December 7, 2019. He received burns on his arm, neck, mouth, and hands. He also had a compound fracture of his leg that has already had one surgery and will have another Wednesday the 11th. Justin is the sole provider for his family and will be unable to work for quite sometime. In addition he is hospitalized 4 hours from home. Justin, Taylor and their sweet baby Brynlee could use all the help we can give them. No amount is too small. It all adds up!”
