RATTLER LOCALS: Like Father Like Son; Lucas’ & Fowlers’ Set to Compete Against Each Other for the First Time
OPP, Alabama (May 22, 2020) — If you have been to a handful of dirt track events along the Gulf Coast, or even some Cuplite races at the famed South Alabama Speedway, then you have probably heard the name “Lucas” once or twice. Shep Lucas, a veteran racer whether it be dirt or asphalt, has had his fair share of success in the Cuplite division at SAS.
Shep has been grooming son Dale Lucas on the dirt spectrum and the “Kid Missile” is certainly starting to follow in the footsteps of the “McKenzie Missile”, his dad. Dale has made a name for himself on the dirt ovals surrounding SAS picking up a handful of wins and out dueling some of the legends of the area.
Friday night will be a first for both father and son, though. For Dale, it’s his first time competing in a race on asphalt. For both Dale and Shep, it’s their first time competing against each other. The two really couldn’t have picked a better track to duel each other at. Many years ago, a familiar father/son duo competed together for the first time at the very 4/10ths mile of banked asphalt that will see the Lucas’ in action Friday; that famous duo shared the last name “Elliott.”
In the Elliott battle it was son Chase out pacing dad Bill. Dale believes, unfortunately, it may be the other way around at the end of the Cuplite feature.
“I’m feeling pretty good [heading into the race].” said Dale. “I practiced the car last Sunday and it felt really good but as far as being able to compete with dad, that’s going to be tough because he’s been able to get around the asphalt stuff pretty good.”
Friday night will be the first of four events that 17 year old Dale Lucas will compete in this weekend across two states. Friday at South Alabama Speedway, Saturday at Northwest Florida Speedway, Sunday at Southern Raceway, and Monday at Tri-County Speedway.
In addition to the Lucas,’ it will also be the first time for another father/son team on track together. Jason Fowler and son Jarod Fowler are poised to make their on track debut Friday as well. Jason is veteran at South Alabama Speedway and son Jarod has watched his father compete for many years now.
Nonetheless it’s set to be an entertaining Cuplite feature Friday night, one that may require some assistance post-race from Steve Harvey, host of Family Feud.
Cuplites are on the racing card for the Friday portion of the 44th Annual Hardee’s Rattler 250 Weekend. Also in action are the Mini-Sportsman, Coyotes, Street Stocks, and Super Stocks.
Racing is set to begin at 7:00 pm local time. Be sure to check our social media for a full detailed schedule of events for Friday’s action.
