How to Make the 53rd Snowball Derby
PENSACOLA, Florida (December 4, 2020) — It’s one of the most nail biting, intense moments in all of short track racing. It’s Pole Qualifying for the Snowball Derby. Over 50 drivers will each take timed laps to determine the 30 fastest, those locked into the race on Sunday. From there, the only hope for most of the remaining drivers is to transfer from the Last Chance qualifying race on Saturday.
Here is how the Snowball Derby field is determined:
- 53 Drivers – There were 55 entered, but Michael House and Bob Lyon both crashed and do not have backup cars.
- Each driver gets two timed laps
- The top 30 drivers on speed and/or the three provisional drivers, will lock into the show in qualifying.
- Provisional Drivers: Stephen Nasse; 2020 Southern Super Series Champion and Bubba Pollard; 2020 Blizzard Series Champion. If those drivers qualify inside the top 30, the provisionals will go to the next driver in line in points.
- Past Champion: If needed, last year’s winner, Travis Braden will make the field as a 37th entry if unable to time in during qualifying.
- The four remaining spots on the grid will be set in the Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday.
This format has produced some of the most exciting moments in all of short track racing. Thousandths of a second can determine a driver’s fate.
Last year, Cole Butcher claimed the top spot, while the final driver to find his way to the grid was the now late, but always great, David Rogers.
Qualifying will air live on Speed51.tv on Friday night at 6:00 PM Central.
