Practice Day at 52nd Snowball Derby Calm and Chaotic
PENSACOLA, Florida (December 6, 2019) — Thursday was practice day at the 52nd Snowball Derby, and while there were no major incidents on track, the action was fast and fierce as Jesse Dutilly, and Cole Butcher were the fastest cats in town, topping the Super Late Model charts. Dutilly, fastest overall on the day, was fastest in the first session, while Butcher reigned over sessions two and three.
“We had a lot of speed right off”, said Dutilly. “We still have stuff to work on to make it better, but we are really happy with what we have.”
“We’re pretty confident,” said Butcher. “We did a couple race runs and couple mock runs and we were good both ways so we’ll see what happens Friday night, weather permitting and we’ll go from there.”
Butcher is no stranger to speed at the Snowball Derby, having started from the front row in last year’s edition. Staying dialed in for the money lap in qualifying, however, is the tricky part.
“Its all about the weather, and that could play a big factor, but it takes a little bit of luck, a little bit of talent and good crew behind you.”
For the Snowflake 100 Pro Late Models, Carson Hocevar swept the first two sessions, while Mason Diaz closed out the day on top of session three.
“It’s been pretty, good but I messed up a little bit on the last run there,” said Hocevar. “I got really loose there and kinda blew the lap, but to be P1 overall is not bad. KBR Development has put together a pretty good piece for the race.”
While Diaz topped the final session of the day, he remarked that his day was, “all over the place.”
“Out of the box it was pretty fast,” he said. “Then we ran into some issues when the starter went bad. We lost a couple of runs in the session but it didn’t set us back too far.”
