PixelatedRESULTS: Pollard Picks up Emotional Southern Super Series Win in Pensacola
PENSACOLA, Florida (June 27, 2020) — Bubba Pollard wrapped up an emotional weekend with a very rewarding trip to victory lane, picking up his 26th career Southern Super Series win, and 15th at Five Flags Speedway in Saturday night’s Universal Fabricators 100.
Pollard ran the famous colors of the late David Rogers in Friday’s race, finishing third. Afterward, he was happy with the positive result, but told Short Track Scene’s Matt Weaver that he knew David wouldn’t have been happy with not winning. Pollard upped the ante by three on Saturday night.
“It’s been a great weekend with everything that went on with David (Rogers) and being able to run his race car last night. Man, jumping back into mine today and getting the victory; it doesn’t get much better than that,” Pollard told Speed51 in victory lane. “Pretty cool, it was a special weekend.”
This was the second race of a Friday/Saturday Rowdy Energy Twin 100 race weekend, serving as rounds two and three of the Southern Super Series season, and rounds one and two of the Blizzard Series season.
Pollard came into the weekend as the Southern Super Series points leader, and leaves the weekend atop both the Southern Super Series, and Blizzard Series leaderboards.
And now… The Race Rundown.
Kyle Plott started from the pole by virtue of the 12 car redraw following Friday night’s race.
On lap two, California’s Bob Lyon made heavy contact with the turn one wall after an incident with another car, presumably Nick Nerri, going into the corner. While Lyon’s car was destroyed, Nerri’s team was able to effect repairs to get that machine back into the fray.
The race’s second yellow flew with 75 laps remaining as Donnie Wilson found himself dealing with an electrical fire in his cockpit associated with a quick disconnect switch. In the process of dealing that issue, he was hit from behind by Logan Bearden on the frontstretch and sent spinning. Wilson made slight contact with the wall, then pitted and after his crew evaluated the car, he retired from the event, marking a disappointing end for the Oklahoma driver in his 71st attempt in Pensacola. He had made it all the way up to eighth after starting 26th.
Plott led just under half of the race as comers and goers sorted themselves out behind him in the first 46 laps of the event.
Notably, Friday night’s winner Stephen Nasse positioned himself in the top five after starting 12th, and Casey Roderick methodically worked his way up the leaderboard after starting from way back in the field, climbing to 13th by halfway.
With 54 to go, Jake Garcia assumed the lead as Plott fell off the pace and out of the race due to a broken shock mount.
Garcia held the lead, working through lapped traffic, until lap 73, when Bubba Pollard dove under the 2020 Alabama 200 winner in turn three to take the lead.
From there, Pollard set sail to claim a very handsome payday, upwards of $15,000+ with the 2.1 second margin of victory over Jake Garcia, and Pensacola’s Jeremy Pate.
PURE STOCKS: Darrell McDonald III picked up his third win of the 2020 season in the Pure Stock 25 lap feature, beating out Mike Moody and Austin McDuffie. McDonald led the entire way, and was only ever challenged by Friday night’s winner, Jerry Goff. With six laps to go, Goff spun off of turn four, and made hard contact with the inside wall, damaging his car and ending his night.
PRO TRUCKS: Mobile, Alabama’s Grant Thomspon found the lead quickly and scored his second Pro Truck feature win at Pensacola in 2020. The 35 lap race had five cautions for various spins and minor contact, and after every caution, Thompson was able to clear the second place truck either going into turn one, or coming off of turn two. He fended off challenges from Cameron Wienberg, Brandon Burks and Hunter Robbinson.
