PixelatedRESULTS: Pollard on Fire in Summer Sizzler 75 at Five Flags
PENSACOLA, Florida (August 1, 2020) — Bubba Pollard brought home a cool $15,000 after a hot night of racing at Five Flags Speedway in the Southern Super Series and Blizzard Series combo event. Pollard took advantage of lapped traffic to find his way around Kaden Honeycutt late in the race, going on to score his 22nd career Blizzard Series event in Pensacola.
“The laps really snuck up on me, to be honest with you. We got to 30 to go there and I thought, oh hell, I’ve got to go,” Pollard told Speed51. “I didn’t know how far he was going to get out there when I was behind (Kyle) Plott. I could see him getting away from us a little bit, so I knew I had to step it up.
“I didn’t try to pick it up any, usually when you try to pick it up you overdrive and mess up. That’s the biggest thing, staying consistent, hitting your marks and try to run him down. I usually can get through lapped traffic pretty easily and tonight I just couldn’t. I felt like I could make up more ground in open racetrack than I was in traffic.”
Donnie Wilson put young Kaden Honeycutt behind the wheel of his car, and the debut of the pairing, Honeycutt led 61 laps and finished second. Wilson praised the young driver on social media to which Honeycutt responded:
“Thanks very much for the opportunity and I appreciate everyone’s hard work. I had a great time and look forward to the next one and hopefully finishing one spot better.”
And Now… The Race Rundown:
Making his first start for Donnie Wilson in the popular number 2 car, Kaden Honeycutt was very fast all day long in Pensacola, posting the fastest lap in the final Southern Super Series practice of the day, then going on to win his ten lap heat race, placing himself on the pole for the 75 lap feature event.
There were three separate heat races to set the field. Honeycutt won heat one, while Kyle Plott took the second heat after a fierce battle with Connor Okrzesik. Hunter Robbins took the checkers first in the third and final heat.
At the start of the main event, Honeycutt cleared Plott with ease going into turn one, on lap one. Honeycut would set a blazing pace, and led 61 laps off the race.
With 15 laps remaining, Honeycutt found himself bogged down by a lapped car, making contact with the right front of his machine. This allowed Bubba Pollard to make up a tremendous amount of ground in no time, and put Pollard in striking position.
Pollard took advantage of the chicane the lapped car created, and took the lead from Honeycutt with 14 laps to go.
Pollard then pulled out to a 1.5 second lead en route to the win.
Honeycutt held on to second place, with Stephen Nasse another second back in third. Pensacola’s Jeremy Pate continues to show his might as a championship contender with a very solid fourth place finish, and Kyle Plott, who has had tremendous pace all season but lacked in reliability, held together for a promising fifth place result.
