PixelatedRESULTS: Call Him 5 Time Ty; Majeski Wins The Rattler… Again
OPP, Alabama (March 13, 2022) — Ty Majeski is on the precipice of becoming the next NASCAR superstar, but his roots remain in the short track racing world. Each year the Wissconsin native travels down to partake in one of the super late model community’s hallowed events, the Rattler 250. In the heart of the deep south, among the area’s famed peanut farms sits the four-tenths mile oval, South Alabama Speedway. On Sunday, Majeski added to his growing legend by dominating and winning the 46th edition of the Rattler 250, marking the fifth time he has won this event.
“The car was just really good,” Majeski said in victory lane. “It’s a new car, it’s second time out and we really hit on it. We unloaded really close on Thursday. I knew this car had the feel it needed to be competitive and it was really good. It’s fun driving racecars like that.”
That car is “TobyCar 001”, designed and built by Toby Nuttleman. This car debuted in December at Five Flags Speedway for the Snowball Derby, finishing eleventh. Majeski and Nuttleman brought that car to South Alabama and it showed tremendous speed right off the truck, with odds makers putting Majeski as the 7-2 favorite to win.
“To come out with version one and have it be dominant like this is a testament to Justin and Toby at the fab shop,” said Majeski. “They build great racecars and I’m just the lucky guy that gets to drive them.”
Majeski started from the pole and led the opening laps, but was heavily contested by another midwest contender in Austin Nason. Nason took his turns at the lead and the pair would battle throughout the day over the race’s multiple restarts.
“Austin had a really good short run car, but then fell off on the long runs,” said Majeksi. “He could fire off really good and get me on those restarts and then he’d just start coming back to me. We had a really good long run car and I feel like we gave up on the short run to be better on the long run and thankfully the race ended on a long run.”
Nason would ultimately finish in third, a very impressive performance for the winner of the 56th annual National Short Track Championship in the Big 8 Late Model Series at Rockford Speedway (Illinois) in October of 2021.
“We showed our speed,” said Nason after the race. “I felt like we had speed all weekend long and the thing was good. We just made the wrong adjustment there at the end; that was our fault. I can’t blame anyone but me, I gave the wrong information and it came back and bit us.”
“We (Nason and Majeksi) race a lot against each other up north,” said Nason. “It was finally good to run his pace for once, even though we didn’t show it there at the end. If we had went in a little bit different route with our adjustment we would have had something for him.”
While Majeski and Nason battled throughout the day, Bubba Pollard methodically worked his way up from the 13th starting spot to put himself in position with a chance to contend for the win. With a long green flag run to end the race, that chance never came, but Pollard slotted into a nice runner up spot after having struggled to find the speed he needed earlier in the weekend.
“We had a good car,” said Pollard after the race. “We just couldn’t fire off on that last restart like we needed to, to put ourselves in position. All and all it was good we just have to get a little better on our qualifying. I knew the car would race fine, but you kind of put yourself in a hole there coming through the field taking chances and stuff. All and all a good day but I would’ve liked to have seen a caution there at the end just to make something of it and to see if I could out run him (Majeski) and make a good show.”
Pollard admitted there was a bit of uncertainty in his chances on the day after a poor qualifying effort. He said he feels like he is still learning and adjusting to his new Port City racecar and that it’s a continual learning process.
“There was,” he said. “I mean, I’ve been doing this a long time, and the car drives good and I knew we had a good racecar but sometimes that can go either way. It was just lazy all weekend. It felt good and was easy to drive. Not running this car much and not having any experience in this racecar you’re always wondering in the back of your mind just how good you are, but I take days like today and learn off of them and build going into the next one.”
The next one, is the Georgia Spring Nationals at Crisp Motorsports Park in Cordele, Georgia. It will mark the second event of the 2022 Southern Super Series season as well as the second trip for these drivers to Cordele this year, as many ran SpeedFest in January. Bubba Pollard won the event with Chandler Smith a close second.
